Chronological catalogue of Casts acquisitions Casts are catalogued by year of acquisition. Apart from regularizing the spelling of Greek and Latin, so that the sculpture can be found easily in the The Reception of Classical Art in Britain - the book for which this Catalogue was written - the lists follow the Ashmolean Museum's annual reports. They begin with the first year of Percy Gardner's professorship, 1887-1888. Casts acquired by Pelham's Cast Committee in 1884 are catalogued on pages 216-218 of The Reception of Classical Art in Britain, those given by Philip Bury Duncan in 1845 on pages 174-175, by Lady Chantrey in 1843 on pages 185-187, and by Sir Roger Newdigate in 1777 on page 118. Some of the entries in the annual reports are laconic; this is a particular problem for portrait busts and statuettes. Some are for duplicates and some are for casts no longer in the collection. Since the principal purpose of the research behind this catalogue has been to identify the casts in Oxford today no attempt has been made to provide extensive cataloguing information about the sculpture from which the casts were taken. The history of their discovery, publication and appreciation can be found in the text of The Reception of Classical Art in Britain. |
