Attic red-figure

Makron's 'Helen skyphos'

Museum: Boston, Museum of Fine Arts
Size: 21.5cm high and 27.9cm diameter (skyphos signed by Hieron as maker and Makron as painter)
Function: convivial
Technique: red-figure
Style: early classical
Subject/s: A. Paris (named Alexandros) takes Helen (named) by the wrist; Eros flies above to indicate the love interest. B. Menelaos draws his sword on Helen.
Date: early mid 5th c.
Analysis: many figures (even under the handles, young and short (Aineas, named), old (Priamos, named) and seated) and their voluminous drapery spread across the bowl and the lack of black paint on the foot make the vase look very light. It was found at Suessula in Campania.
