The Mausoleum at Halikarnassos
The monumental tomb of Mausolus, King of Caria (in Asia Minor), was built between about 360 and 350 BC. It gives its name to all later "mausolea". The sculptural decoration was by Greek artists and with Greek themes, for example, the fight between Greeks and Amazons. The sculptors were said to have been the best of their day (Leochares, Bryaxis, Scopas, Timotheus) and the style is certainly of the highest quality of Greek mainland work.
