Pediments of the Temple of Aphaia on Aigina

Among the best preserved pediments of homeland Greece in the Archaic period are those from the island of Aigina. Both the west (earlier, about 490 BC) and the east (later, about 480 BC) had Athena at the centre of a fight at Troy, in which Aiginetan heroes were prominent. The style of both pediments is late Archaic. They are among the first temple pediments to have the figures carved wholly in the round.
