CAVI Lemma: BF oinochoe. Unattributed; Keyside Class. First quarter fifth.
CAVI Subject: Odysseus and the Sirens: at left, three sirens on a rock, one with a lyre; at
right, the forepart of a ship; at the far right, Odysseus tied to the mast.
CAVI Inscriptions: Above the sirens: σερεν. To their lower right: σ(ε)ρεν{1}. To left of
Odysseus' lower middle: Ολυτ[τ]-ε-υς{2}. Starting from his mouth and to right of
the sail: λῦσ[ο]ν, retr.{3}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} The letters are clear, except that the first epsilon seems to lack the
bottom horizontal. The reading given by Gropengiesser is σερεν (not σιρεν). The
photo in Ars Ant. confirms this, if we mean the inscription below the lyre. She
seems to mention only the one occurrence of `siren', if my note is correct. {2}
- indicates wider spacing. {3} Rendered ΓΥΣN by Schauenburg in the text (i.e.
the retr. is not mentioned), but later explained by him as λῦσον.
