  • CAVI Comments: The vase is perhaps not Attic. The letters marked {1} are = M with the second vertical shorter than the first; those marked {2} are three-stroke sigmas. CVA says the inscription is in the language of the early inhabitants of Tarentum, while written in Greek letters. Gill in Ant. thinks the vase was made in a Lucanian workshop. An owner's Gr. under the foot made before firing (Johnston).
