CAVI Lemma: BF/RF amphora. From Vulci. Psiax. Last quarter sixth. 520-510.
CAVI Subject: A: RF: Dionysus reclining, with a satyr and a maenad. B: BF: the chariot of
Heracles, with Iolaus.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: all Gr.: to right of maenad's middle: Ευμ(α)υ(ρ)(α)ς{1}. To right of
Dionysus' head: Διονυσο{2}. To right of satyr's arm: hιαχος{3}. B: all Dip.: to
right of the head: h[ερ]ακλεος. To right of Heracles' right hand: Ιολεο{2}.
Under the belly of the horses, vertically, stoich.: hιπ[π]οκρατες | καλος.
.......... ..... Above Hermes: hερμο.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} so apparently the facs. in CVA, where the rho may be a pi; I read in a
photo.: Ευμ(α)υρες, with the fourth letter perhaps an epsilon; but the photo may
have been taken before the vase was cleaned. K.-D. (after LIMC iv?) reads:
Ευμελπες; so also V.&K. {2} most names seem to be in the genitive. {3} i.e.,
hιαχ[χ]ος = hιακχος = Ιακχος (Dionysus); so also V.&K.
CAVI Comments: The graffiti done with a very fine point, but I think genuine. See AttScr
(1990), 58-59. Three- and four-stroke sigma.
CAVI Number: 5254
