CAVI Lemma: Fragmentary plain band cup. From Vulci. Unattributed. Third quarter sixth.
CAVI Subject: No figured decoration; handle palmettes.
CAVI Inscriptions: Handle zone: χαιρ[ε] κα̣ι πιεις{1}. B: the same inscription, according to
Jahn; now lost.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} complete in Jahn.
CAVI Comments: Broken at the end of World War II and now fragmentary. Fellmann: the handle
palmettes recall the Amasis Painter. The same inscription on B of the lip cup
Copenhagen 13,966, by the Epitimos Painter where however Beazley in Para. reads:
χαιρε και πιει σ[υ]. This does not seem possible if Jahn's reading is correct.
According to Kretschmer, πιει σ[υ] was read by Roscher and Bergk and accepted by
Schulze [and Beazley], but is rejected by Kretschmer who reads πιεις; he is
followed by Fellmann. [[On the still existing side of Munich 2186 there is
clearly vac. after the sigma. Probably a prospective subjunctive, very close to
the future, i.e. a three-word version with the traditional meaning, and
traditional also insofar as this use of the aorist subjunctive is preclassical,
