CAVI Lemma: Fr. of small RF bell krater. From Athens, Agora C-D 17. Unattributed. Third
quarter fifth{1}. Ca. 430-420 (Moore).
CAVI Subject: At left, arm and hand of a figure; head and shoulder of a boy.
CAVI Inscriptions: Above the boy in added white: Φιλιο̣ν̣{2}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} "Time of Polygnotos," Beazley (orally, 1953). {2} the fifth letter could
be omega; the sixth is at the edge of the sherd, hence the inscription could be
longer. The sketch on Moore's p. 196 gives a meaningless sequence of letters:
ΦΛΙΛΙΙΛ[--], but the ph. on pl. 47 shows clearly: Φιλιο̣ν̣ (the omicron is open
at the left, the nu runs into the break; both letters are certain). The
occurrence is given in LGPN ii, s.v., no. 2, I do not know from what source.
CAVI Comments: Mixed alphabet or Ionic.
CAVI Number: 0536
AVI Bibliography: Museum card. — LGPN ii (1994), s.v. Φιλιων 2. — Moore (1997), 196/365, pl. 47
(shows inscription).
