Comments on Subject: ANDEAN CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT DURING THIS PERIOD WAS CLEARLY AFFECTED BY THE COMPARATIVE CLOSENES OF VERY CONTRASTING ECOSYSTEMS. BECAUSE OF THE VERY PRONOUNCED TOPOGRAPHY OF SOUTH AMERICA, A RANGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ZONES, INCLUDING COASTAL DESERTS, MOUNTAINS AND TROPICAL JUNGLES WERE ALL WITHIN EASY REACH. THIS PROXIMITY RESULTED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CULTURAL ASSEMBLAGE THAT WAS BOTH MATERIALLY ADN SYMBOLICALLY VERY RICH.
