  • CAVI Collection: Paris, Louvre E 831.
  • CAVI Lemma: BF Tyrrhenian neck amphora. Castellani Painter (Bothmer); Guglielmi Painter (Kluiver). Third quarter sixth. 550-530. Middle period (of Guglielmi Painter) (Kluiver).
  • CAVI Subject: A: Dionysus and maenads. B: fight, with women watching.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: B: nonsense: ποειε. διεσ[--], retr. Under the foot, Dip.: a trace; see Johnston (1979), 182/52{1}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} CVA gives ΓΑ, retr. "Much restored," Beazley.
  • CAVI Comments: K., with R.' agreement, reads a signature: between the heads of the combatants, near horizontal: Διες, retr., and between their legs, bearing downward: ποετες. [I am very doubtful: I agree that the first letter of the `name' is a delta (of shape S 1 in the chart in AttScr) and the ending suggests a name. But the fourth letter of the other word appears in K.'s ph. (fig. 24) as an iota, and I am not aware of the noun ποιητης as a substitute for εποιησεν on vases. The painter may be playing with a signature or the similarities may be coincidental.]
