CAVI Lemma: RF lekythos. From Gela. Achilles Painter. Second quarter fifth. 460-450.
450-445 (Oakley). Early (Beazley).
CAVI Subject: Artemis and a woman.
CAVI Inscriptions: between the figures, at shoulder height: Κλενιας | κ(α)λος | Πηδιος{1}. Under
foot, Gr.: alpha with a horizontal line at the apex. [Cf. Johnston (1979), 71/A
1, examples 1, 3 and 8.]
CAVI Footnotes: {1} tabella inscription; the first two lines probably stoich., the third at
some distance below and not stoich. For the gen. of Πηδιευς, see Meisterhans(3),
p. 141, para. 10 and Threatte (1996), 248, para. 56.02251a (add Πεδιο̃ς, and
Σαμιο̃ς, ARV[2] 995/123). Actually the name is Πεδιευς [[with short e]], so
perhaps we should read Πhεδιος [[Π{h}(ε)]](?). Or more likely eta is here
substituted for short e, see Threatte (1980), 39 and 159; Threatte (1996), 685.
CAVI Comments: O. and S. interpret the scene as a bride offering her belt to Artemis. Mixed
alphabet. Sigma twice three-stroke and once four-stroke.
CAVI Number: 7552
