Decoration: A: DIONYSOS (BEARDLESS) SEATED WITH THYRSOS, BETWEEN MAENADS B: ARIADNE WITH FILLET BETWEEN EROTES, ONE FLYING WITH FILLET I: SATYR, MAENAD SEATED WITH THYRSOS
Last Recorded Collection: Paris, Cabinet des Medailles: M824
Publication Record: Immerwahr, H., A Corpus of Attic Vase Inscriptions, Preliminary Edition (1998): 6225
CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Ruvo. Unattributed. Second half fifth.
CAVI Subject: Int.: a wreath of ivy leaves and berries; a satyr before a seated maenad who
holds a thyrsus. A: a maenad; a youthful Dionysus (the head missing) with a
thyrsus, seated; a maenad looking back. B: Eros flying, with a fillet; Ariadne
with a fillet; another Eros, touching Ariadne's arm.
CAVI Inscriptions: The Inscriptions are repainted{1}. Int.: καλος{2}. καλαι{2}. A: between the
left maenad's head and the thyrsus: καλο[ς]. Between Dionysus and the right
maenad's head: Διον[υ]σος{3}. B: Αριαδνα[ι] καλαι{4}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} correctly, according to de Witte as reported by Oppermann (so de Ridder).
{2} de Ridder, text. {3} so de Ridder's text; the facs. on p. 488 shows
[Δ]ιονισος with three-stroke sigma twice, while the dr. of fig. 118 has
four-stroke twice. {4} so de Ridder's text, surely misread; the facs. on p. 488
has: Α(ρ)ια(δ)να and καλαι. Originally reported as ΑΡΙΑΓNΕ; see Threatte (1980),
565.
CAVI Comments: Despite de Witte's confidence, I think the inscriptions may well be false
(modern) or incorrectly restored. I suspect the whole vase is heavily restored.
CAVI Number: 6225
AVI Bibliography: De Ridder (1902), ii, 487-88, fig. 118, pl. 23.
