CAVI Lemma: RF amphora. From Vulci. Recalls Bowdoin-Eye Painter. Last quarter sixth.
CAVI Subject: A: Apollo, with a deer, playing the lyre; at left, Leto; at right, Artemis.
B: three athletes: discobolus; acontist; boxer.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: above Apollo's head: Απολλονος. B: to left of the acontist, facing him:
[Φ]αϋλλος, retr. To left and right of his head: κα^λος. On his right, facing
him: Λαδαμας, retr. Under the foot, Dip.: Ο on navel; Gr.: ΑΡ [[lig.]] with a
stemless rho{1}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} after Johnston (1979). See also the old BM Cat., pl. B/791.
CAVI Comments: The assignment of the inscriptions to the figures is not quite clear: CVA
assigns Phayllos and the kalos to the discus thrower and Ladamas to the middle
figure. Beazley in CB also assigns Phayllos to the discus thrower. The dr. in
JHS suggests that attribution, giving kalos to the middle figure and therefore
Ladamas to the boxer. There is thus no kalos-name. I ignore the way the
inscriptions face the middle figure.
