CAVI Subject: Undecorated.
CAVI Inscriptions: Written on the sherd, Gr.: h ερμ[ει] ε? ι? Ιμ' αγαλΙμα.
CAVI Comments: NOT A VASE. - Vanderpool gives Schweigert's reading:
Ερμ' ειμ' αγαλμα, "I am Hermes' statue." Jeffery prefers:
h ερμει μ' αγαλμα ..., "may be an imperfect draft ... for a
sculptor who was making a Hermes statue for some client"
(LSAG 74 and n. 2). Lang reads: h ερμει Ι μαγαλ| μα, and
says: "An informal label on a dedication: "To Hermes
(someone dedicated) me, a pleasing gift." The above reading
is from Sprunt Studies, where I also suggest an
alternative: h ερμ(α) ειμ(ι) αγαλμα. I assume an anonymous
dedication of a `stone' added to a stone pile. Perhaps
metrical, since elided?
