CAVI Lemma: WG lekythos. Douris{1}. Ca. 500. Very early. Transitional I (Rich) (Buitron).
CAVI Subject: Shoulder: a maenad with thyrsus and torch. Body: warriors arming: two groups
of two figures each: 1. Front: youth putting on greaves with one foot on a low
base or altar; a woman faces him holding a spear and a shield. 2. Youth holding
a helmet and shield; on his right, in the center, a stool with clothes; a youth
faces the warrior holding a spear and sword.
CAVI Inscriptions: Shoulder: to the maenad's right: ḥο παις. Body: 1. To right of the youth's
head: Μοσ̣[α]ιος̣{2}. On his left, nearly illegible: Μ̣ο̣[.]ος{3}. At the very
top of the base, in very small letters: [--]ριχιον καλο[ς]{4}. 2. Above the
stool: Παναατιος, for Παναιτιος. To right of the spear held out by the right
youth: καλος. Between the youth holding the sword and the youth putting on
greaves: Nι(κ)οδρομο̣ς{5}. Near the bottom: καλος. Under the foot, Gr.: ligature
ΗΣ [[lig.]] and Ionic Γ. Not in Johnston (1979).
CAVI Footnotes: {1} attributed by Ortiz and Zimmermann. {2} my reading, uncertain;
differently Dörig. {3} I thought the first letter not a kappa. I suggest for
Μ̣ο̣[.]ος the restoration Μο[σχ]ος, a name that occurs on Malibu 83.AE.321. {4}
so Dörig; I read: ...ιχικ̣[.](.)(.) κα̣λο[ς]. This is practically illegible. {5}
the kappa looks like an Attic gamma. True reads Nικοδρομος, Guy: hιπ[π]οδρομος,
but thinks the mu is an omicron with a squiggle. Both readings have problems:
the third letter is not a kappa, but the first a clear nu; pi for the third
letter is very attractive: Hippodromos with both heta and mu miswritten?
CAVI Comments: Douris' early style of lettering, still pioneer-type and sloppy. Very hard to
read. Kurtz (1989), 123: Douris' WG lekythoi are early but not his earliest
work; Buitron says `transitional' to his early middle period. The readings are
in part very uncertain.
