  • CAVI Collection: Rome, Villa Giulia.
  • CAVI Lemma: RF oinochoe. From Cerveteri. Terpaulos Painter. First quarter fifth.
  • CAVI Subject: A young warrior retreating under a shower of arrows.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: The inscriptions are horizontal: in the field: Λυσεας καλος, ναιχι δοκει τοι.(1) and: καλος, retr. On the band serving as a ground line: Λυσεας καλος. From the youth's mouth: παπαι, retr. Also: γονυ{2}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} I did not see γονυ and ναιχι, which are taken from Beazley. {2} there may be more at the end (Beazley). Is γονυ a military posture equivalent to `at ease' (putting one's shield at the knee)? This could be a joke, but the reading may be incomplete. [[Addenda:]] {1} for a discussion of τοι see Threatte (1996), 340-41. {2} there may be more at the end (Beazley). Is γονυ a military posture? It seems to be the equivalent of `at ease', cf. e.g. Diodorus Siculus 15.32.5. - I take ναιχι and γονυ from Beazley as I did not see these words.
  • CAVI Comments: ARV[2] gives the name Lyseas twice; I saw it only once.
  • CAVI Number: 7075
  • AVI Bibliography: Beazley (1957), 6/xii (not ill.). — ARV[2] (1963), 308/3. — Para. (1971), 357. — Threatte (1996), 340.
