  • AVI Record Number: 6994
  • CAVI Collection: Rome, Vatican 413.
  • CAVI Lemma: BF pelike. Unattributed{1}. Last quarter sixth.
  • CAVI Subject: A: oil seller. B: oil seller.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: A: starting to right of the seated seller's middle:  Ζεῦ(.) πάτερ, αἴ(θ)ε πλούσιος γεν[οίμαν]{2}. B: from the mouth of the seller (who is standing at left): ἔ̅δε̅ μὲν ἔ̅δε̅ πλέον· παραβέβακεν{3}. To the seller's left: ιο[2-3], retr.(?){4}. Under the foot ΑΡ [[lig.]], retr., Johnston (1979), 133/9E,86.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} Bothmer attributes this as the name piece to his `Plousios Painter', see Revue du Louvre 27 (1977) ca. 216. (Ref. from N. Leipen et al., Glimpses of Excellence: a Selection of Greek Vases and Bronzes from the Elie Borowski Collection (exhib. 18 Dec. 1984 - 30 June 1985) 11/under no. 7.) {2} Albizzati's photo shows a trace of a letter, or blob, by a break after Ζευ; could it be Ζευς?, nom. for voc.(?). {3} Kretschmer and Albizzati read παρβεβακεν, but A.'s photo shows παραβεβακεν, a hybrid dialect form; see Milne apud Richter. Perhaps πλέο̅ν (cf. Robert's alternative) is preferable, sc. ὁ ἀμφορεύς. {4} or Ιφ̣[--, or [2-3]οι, not retr.(?).
  • CAVI Comments: C. Robert (1919), 118 thought the two inscriptions are thought, not spoken; cf. Lissarrague (1992), 201 n. 31. - Robert also thought the letters λο were to be restored to οκτο, the number of fingers extended, but this is disproved by an examination of the vase as restored and cleaned, performed by F. Buranelli in 1990 who showed that this inscription, incomplete at the beginning, ends in -οι. See Lissarrague, n. 32. [The inscription is said to be near the figure on the right on A; it does not show in the dr., Lissarrague, fig. 14.] - Shapiro (1997), n. 16 gives a list of BF and RF pelikai showing the sale of oil. - The theta lacks the dot. The rho is tailed.
