CAVI Lemma: BG skyphos. From Athens (probably). Unattributed. Last quarter fifth.
CAVI Subject: No figured decoration.
CAVI Inscriptions: The inscription in three circles around the bottom of the pot: Κηφισοφῶντος ἡ
κύλιξ·· ἐὰν δέ τις κατάξι, δραχμὴν αποτεισε, δῶρον ὂν παρὰ Ξενύ(λ)[ο]υ.
CAVI Comments: Once in Athens, Fauvel's house. κατάξι is Böckh's emendation of κατάξει.
Leake has κατάξηι, but wrongly νωχον for δῶρον. For ἀποτεισε (ε for ει), see
Threatte (1980), 300/10. For the last word, Leake has Ξευχ without the final
upsilon; EV accepts Böckh's Ξενύλ[ο]υ, but should this not have double lambda?
LGPN ii lists Ξενυλος (from this vase) with one lambda as distinct from
Ξενυλλος. E.V. gives four parallels for kylix = skyphos: see Oxford 1956.311;
skyphos base from Kea, Hesp. 33 (1964) 333-334. Two other skyphoi are not listed
as Attic (thought they may be): Zürich inv. 2531, and one found at the Cimmerian
Bosporus (see EV, p. 189). Ionic alphabet.
