Last Recorded Collection: Catania, Museo Civico Castello Ursino
Publication Record: Bollettino d'Arte: 45 (1960) 251, FIG.7 BELOW LEFT Panvini, R. and Sole, L. (eds.), La Sicilia in eta arcaica, Dalle apoikiai al 480 a.C., Catalogo della Mostra (Palermo, 2009): 322 (I)
CAVI Lemma: BF LM [[lip]] cup. From Catania, Sanctuary of Demeter. Unattributed. Third
quarter sixth.
CAVI Subject: Int.: two rampant goats facing. Ext.: ?
CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: to goats' left, facing out: αγριος or Αγριος (a proper name? On the
Tyrrhenian amphora in Cervetri (BADB 7968) it is a satyr name). To the goats'
right, similar but facing in and crowded: [--]αδε(?) vacat. [[and "all' esterno
si legge χαιρε και πιει ευ", not ill.; however, two more inscribed frs. of lip
cups are shown on fig. 7, one probably with nonsense inscr., both sm. and
illeg.]]
CAVI Comments: Since C. does not mention the inscription on the right, I am unsure of the
reading. She cites the vase for the inscription on the left, claiming that the
goat is a wild animal that devours cultivated plants. I wonder if the word
refers to the goat at all. Are the goats male?
