  • CAVI Collection: Louvre G 148.+
  • CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Italy. Makron. First quarter fifth. Early, crude (Beazley). 495-490 (Cromey).
  • CAVI Subject: Int.: man and boy. A: two pairs of man and boy; youth and boy. B: three pairs of men and women.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: along the left margin: the man: Αντομενες{1}. From the boy's mouth: Τιμοκριτος, retr.{2}. A: three pairs of man and boy: the first man not named. Over the first boy's head: Λυσ[1-2]ιδες{3}. The second man not named. Above the second boy's head: Στομ[1-2]ς{4}. A youth, not named. Above the third boy's head: Αρισταρχ[ο]ς{5}. B: man leaning on his stick; his name ends above the woman's head: [--]οριδες{6}. Man with purse; from his face, toward the woman facing him: Σαλ[--]{7}. Woman and youth. Under the handle, probably referring to the youth: Ασοποκλες.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} Cromey rejects this as a proper name and discusses Αντ(ι)μενες and Α(υ)τομενες, preferring the last. [Cf. perhaps Αντοχσενος on Louvre G 108?] {2} so also Pottier. {3} Λυσ[ιπ]ιδες, Hartwig, etc. Λυσ[ιππ]ιδες, Pottier. Cromey suggests Λυσ[ον]ιδες, among other possibilities. {4} Στομ[ιο]ς, Pottier. Or Στομ[α]ς?, Cromey. {5} read by Cromey; cf. Schwerin 725 (ARV[2] 325/73. Αριστ[αγορας], Hartwig. Over the third boy's head: Αρισ̣τα̣ρχ̣[ο]ς, Cromey, a new reading superceding Hartwig's Αριστ[αγορας]. {6} [Ακεστ]οριδες, Klein. [Ακεστ]ο[ρ]ιδες, Hartwig. This would be an earlier A. than the kalos (Beazley). {7} traces of three letters after Σαλ. Kunisch has Σαλ[ιο]ς.
  • CAVI Comments: + several Louvre frs., including the handles. + Louvre C 11,290, ARV[2] 470/183 (see Bothmer). Bothmer 52: Makron marked the little islands reserved for inscriptions with heavy glaze, applied at the same time as the contour stripes and before the background was painted in. Cf. Athens, Acr. ii, 560. - The above readings are imperfect and incomplete; there are many more names and much more complete readings will be furnished by R. Cromey; see now his article in G. Schmeling and J.D. Mikalson, Qui Miscuit Utile Dulci (festchrift Paul L. McKendrick, 1997). For the readings, the reader needs to consult further both Kunisch and Cromey.
