CAVI Lemma: BF Panathenaic prize amphora. From Tarentum, uncertain{1}. Sikelos. Late
sixth. 495-480 (Smets).
CAVI Subject: A: Athena. B: two wrestlers between two onlookers.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: in the usual place, Dip.: τον Αθενεθεν αθλον. B: Gr. on the right-hand
column: Σικελος εγραφσεν.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} probably from one of the Tarentine tombs that produced so many prize
Panathenaics (Neils).
CAVI Comments: The only prize Panathenaic signed by a painter. Robertson (1970) attributes
this piece and two frs. of reverses of Panathenaics to the Syleus Painter, which
would give us his name (Sikelos). Padgett expresses doubts about the
attribution.
