Painter's plaques (Boardman). Date unclear. Ca. 500 (Boardman).
CAVI Subject: Prothesis: double-line border; small girl by the head of the bier; behind the
bier, man and woman on raised ground line, possibly a step.
CAVI Inscriptions: To left of her legs, vertically up: [---]σιο{1}.
CAVI Comments: Lower right-hand corner of a funerary plaque. Large clear letters.
Three-stroke sigma. In ABV 42/38-40, Beazley lists three groups of frs. of
funerary plaques in the Vlastos collection, published in AM 62, pls. 48, 50 and
49 respectively. Add(2) 11 lists nos. 38 and 40 as illustrated by Bakir (1981),
pl. 37, fig. 69, and pl. 38, fig. 70. All three are by Sophilos. — E] {1} it is
hard to see how more than 1-2 letters could be lost. E] {1} so Boardman.
Mommsen: "Die drei Buchstaben ΟΙΣ oder ΟΙN vor einem klagenden Mädchen ...
gehören dagegen nicht zu einem Namen, es handelt sich eher um einen Ausruf der
Klage." I had read [--]ιος, which is probably an error.It is hard to see how
more than 1-2 letters could be lost.
