CAVI Lemma: Fr. of BF Panathenaic prize amphora. From Lindos. Unattributed. Bakchios,
potter. 375/4: Hippodamas archon.
CAVI Subject: A: (Athena): part of the right-hand column shaft.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: to left of the shaft, not facing it: Βαχχ[ιος εποιησεν]. To its right,
starting at about the same height, facing: Ιππο[δαμας ηρχεν].
CAVI Comments: Blinkenberg wrongly thought Bakchios was an agonothete. The inscriptions
start some way below the (missing) column capital. This is the earliest
certainly restorable archon name; the restoration for 392/1 in Berlin inv. 3980
is uncertain. For the family of Bakchios see Robertson 292-95. Valavanis
considers this, and all signed prize Panathenaics, `competition samples' (in
Beazley's phrase) submitted in the second year of the Panathenaic cycle for the
contract for the subsequent (not the immediately following) games.
