CAVI Lemma: RF neck amphora. From Vulci. Kleophrades Painter. First quarter fifth. Ca.
480. Later (Beazley).
CAVI Subject: A: a bearded rhapsode on a bema, reciting. B: flute-player.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: from the rhapsode's mouth, in a large curve: hο̃δέ ποτ' ἐν Τύρινθι
vacat{1}. On the bema, in BG: καλο(ς) ει{2}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} for the metathesis (Τυρινθι for Τιρυνθι) see Threatte (1980), 266 and 391
(with a slight error). {2} The first four letters are large, the fifth letter,
`nu', still larger, the rest quite small. Presumably sigma sideways; I took it
to be a clear nu, but both C. Smith and Beazley (JHS) read καλος, probably
correctly. The painter may have mistaken a sideways sigma for a nu.
CAVI Comments: Shapiro does not believe that this is a rhapsode, rather he is an aulode
accompanied by the flautist on the other side. For this, S. cites his article:
`Hipparchos and the Rhapsodes,' in L. Kurke and C. Dougherty, eds., Cultural
Poetics in Archaic Greece (forthcoming in 1992). - On p. 1632 of ARV[2], Beazley
argues against a suggestion made in JHS 78 (1958) 37 n. 22 (which he does not
name) by saying that the first vowel of Τιρυνς is long (Il. 2.559, etc).
