  • CAVI Collection: Athens, N.M. Acr. ii, 560.
  • CAVI Lemma: Fragmentary RF pyxis. From Athens. Makron. First quarter fifth. 500-490. "Still early" (ARV[2]). Hauptwerk I (Kunisch).
  • CAVI Subject: Women walking, standing, sitting in the gynaikonitis (probably a brothel, Kunisch).
  • CAVI Inscriptions: L. to r.: to right of lower part of a draped woman to right, not facing her (and to left of a swan): Μακρ[--], Μακρ[ον εγραφσεν]. In white, on a red sash, on the left end of a red taenia held by a woman standing to left: κα[λ --]{1}. On the other end: [hιππ]οδαμας καλε{2}. Between the taenia-carrier and the bottom of another female figure who faces right, facing the figure at right: Σιβ[--]{3}. To left of a woman seated to left: [--]λε. Behind her back, facing the next woman who is standing to right: Nαυσιστρ[ατε]/Nαυσιστρα[τ]ε. To right of the last, above a stool and facing the next figure who is walking to left: [Μ]ελιτ[τ]α : καλε/κα[λε]?.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} K. restores κα[λος], perhaps to connect with Hippodamas. {2} so Graef–Langlotz, Beazley in BSA and the sketch in Kunisch, p. 175; ARV[2] has hιπποδαμας complete (error?). The last word, Kunisch thinks, is καλε, miswritten because of the other kale's, which refer to hetaerae. {3} there is no good parallel in LGPN ii, but cf. Σιβιλλα [[Σίβυλλα(?)]].
  • CAVI Comments: For the possible painter's signature, see BSA and ARV[2]; it may also be a (rare) woman's name. On p. 123, Kunisch thinks the inscriptions represent a conversation. On p. 15, he denies that Μακρ[--] is a signature. He notes the names Μακρω and Μακρινη (see 16 n. 69). [There is no fem. Μακρ- name in LGPN ii.] - Robertson points out that the position of Μακρ[--] (which may be a woman's name or a second signature) is the same as that of the known signature of Makron on Boston 13.186. Melitta, Peek. Beazley thought that the κα[--] could also be the name of another woman. - Bothmer (1982), 52: Makron marked the little islands reserved for inscriptions with heavy glaze, applied at the same time as the contour stripes and before the background was painted in. Cf. Louvre G 148.+. - Kunisch thinks that the recurrence of καλε suggests that the women are hetaerae. For the name Hippodamas see Kunisch 20 n. 89. - The number of women is not clear to me. There are slight differences in readings in Beazley (1927–8): καλε is complete after Μελιτ[τ]α. Kunisch is not quite clear either. - Inscriptions in white. Attic. Dotted delta (but not in Kunisch).
