Last Recorded Collection: Basel, private, Herbert Cahn: HC843
Publication Record: Chiarini, S., The so-called Nonsense Inscriptions on Ancient Greek Vases, Between Paideia and Paidiá (Leiden, 2018): 90, FIG.19 (COLOUR) Das Tier in der Antike, University of Zurich 21.9-17.11.1974: PL.40.240 Kreuzer, B., Frühe Zeichner 1500-500 vor Chr., Agyptische, griechische und etruskische Vasenfragmente der Sammlung H.A. Cahn Basel (Freiburg, 1992): 69, NO.70 Schnapp, A., Le chasseur et la cite, Chasse et erotique dans la Grece ancienne (Paris, 1997): 227, NO.106
CAVI Lemma: Frs. of BF band cup. Unattributed. Third quarter sixth.
CAVI Subject: Handle zone: A and B: cortege of horsemen, one group to left, the other to
right.
CAVI Inscriptions: Nonsense: {1} Group to left: all inscriptions horizontal: at the bottom, at
left: [--]ναλιοσοσ. hοποσοσ. ριτοστοσ. To right of one rider's back of head:
ριστ[--]. - {2} Group to right: at the bottom: ριτοστ. ορισοσ. Curved:
ρισ[--]{1}. At the bottom of a rider to right of a handle: ριοσ[--]. On a
separate (fifth?) fr. that shows the BG lip, above the neck of a horse that
faces right: χαιριρ[--].
CAVI Footnotes: {1} reading uncertain.
CAVI Comments: There are four or five frs. - The handle zone is filled with riders, but this
is not a multifigured band cup. The inscriptions, while nonsense, imitate names
of riders and horses. What is the meaning, if any, of the repeated ριστ?
CAVI Number: 2070
