CAVI Collection: Philadelphia, University Museum 3442.
CAVI Lemma: Fragmentary BF amphora. From Orvieto. Exekias. Third quarter sixth. 540-530.
CAVI Subject: A: Menelaus fighting a African (Amasos); Ajax lifting the dead body of
Achilles. B: Death of Antilochos.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: above Amasos: Αμασος. To right of Menelaus' raised arm: Μενελαος. Above
Achilles' body: [Αχ]ιλεος, retr.{1}. B: To left of the prostrate body:
Α̣ντιλοχος, retr. To right of the rightmost of three warriors: Ευφορβος.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} Ajax' name is lost.
CAVI Comments: Beazley in ABV combines both scenes on A as: death of Achilles - Ajax lifting
the body. `Gallery' says: Scenes from the Aethiopis: A: Menelaus fights the
Egyptian king Amasis; Ajax lifting the body of Achilles. [But Amasos does not
look like a king.] Threatte discusses the irregular Attic gen. of names with
foreign associations: perhaps Αμασ[ι]ος, Αμασ[ιδ]ος or Αμασ[ε]ος (the regular
form is Αμασιδος). He also cites as a "slight possibility" my suggestions that
the name is nom. For the lettering of Exekias, see AttScr. Amasos occurs in a
fourth-century funerary inscription, Peek, AM 59 (1934) 54/12a. A dr. in
Beazley's possession shows a triangular rho.
