CAVI Collection: Edinburgh, Royal Scottish Museum 1877.29.
CAVI Lemma: RF hydria. Polygnotos. Third quarter fifth. Ca. 440 (CVA).
CAVI Subject: Shoulder: Eos and Tithonos. Handle zone: laurel wreath. Body: plain.
CAVI Inscriptions: Under foot, Grr.: Χ(α)ριαι{1}. α(ρ)υστηρ or αρυστηρ[ες]{2}. ΛΙ{3}. A Gr. line
crosses the foot.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} Alpha lacks the cross-stroke. {2} Johnston (1979), reads the former. The
rho resembles an Ionic gamma. {3} = 31? But Johnston (1979), reads (or implies)
υδρι[]. I thought: 31 ladles for Charias = Chairias.
CAVI Comments: The readings mainly from CVA. See Toronto 350. Johnston's readings differ in
part, both in G&R and in Johnston (1979). The Gr. is hard to read. The alphabet
is not Attic. For letter forms see the text in AJΑ: υδριαι (implied by Johnston
but not in CVA) and αρυστηρ seem to have different letter forms.
CAVI Number: 3403
