CAVI Lemma: BF neck amphora. From Vulci. Antimenes Painter. Last quarter sixth. Phase 2:
520-515 (Burow).
CAVI Subject: A: Judgment of Paris. B: a youth on horseback between two men.
CAVI Inscriptions: Under the foot, Gr.: ΑΘΤΙ, retr.
CAVI Comments: This four-letter sign occurs frequently on vases of the period, mainly BF
hydriae; several are by the Antimenes Painter or possibly by him (see Burow and
Johnston (1979), 115/1D); the version without tau is found also with the
Euphiletos Painter. Johnston 204 argues against the mark being Etruscan, as has
been suggested (see 242, 1D n. 1); he thinks it is perhaps Aeginetan. He has 9
examples of ΑΘΙ and 14 of ΑΘΤΙ. He follows Nogara (1937), 451 in deriving the
word from Ατθις with metathesis. I have not included all instances in CAVI.
Johnston is not certain whether this is an adjective or a personal name [but he
seems to prefer the former]. Cartwheel theta, nearly rectangular but with
rounded corners.
