CAVI Lemma: BF lekythos. From Eretria{1}. Athena Painter. Early fifth.
CAVI Subject: Warriors leading off a woman.(2)
CAVI Inscriptions: Numerous nonsense inscriptions: above the arm at left, diagonally upward:
σο(δ)ι (the third letter unclear); on its right, along the woman's back: οτ,
probably other letters below; between the woman's and warrior's heads,
diagonally upwards: ο(.)σ; between their lower bodies, similar, but probably
downward: σε^τρκ (uncertain reading); further letters between the warrior and
the old man; to right of the latter's head, curving downward: σοτσ. Typical
lettering.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} see Berlin inv. 3252. {2} the phs. in Haspels do not show the whole
scene: at left, raised arm of a warrior to right(?); woman to right, led by a
warrior to right (χειρ επι καρπῳ); bearded man to left; warrior to left.
CAVI Comments: On Athena Painter's use of nonsense inscriptions, see Haspels, p. 150.
CAVI Number: 2459
AVI Bibliography: Haspels (1936), 147-55, 255/29, pl. 46,1a-b (shows letters) (no bibl.).
