  • AVI Record Number: 1238
  • CAVI Collection: Athens, N.M. Acr. ii, 68.
  • CAVI Lemma: Fr. of RF cup. From Athens. Epiktetos. Last quarter sixth.
  • CAVI Subject: Int.: Minotaur.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: to right of his head: ενοες, for εποες?{1}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} επ̣οει, doubtful: the pi more like a nu, Beazley; ενοει, Graef–Langlotz. The last letter smeared: it is more likely to be a sigma.
  • CAVI Comments: A very casual inscription. Epiktetos' vases always have εποιεσεν or εποιεσε, except for the calyx krater in Villa Giulia (ARV[2] 77/90), which has the incised signature [Ανδο]κιδες εποε on the foot. Tarquinia RC 1091 (ARV[2] 76/65) has εποιεσενοχ and on a wineskin εποιες, presumably for lack of space. Clearly ours is miswritten and the painter wrote nu for pi.
