CAVI Lemma: BF eye cup. From Foiano. Manner of Lysippides Pianter. 530-520.
CAVI Subject: Int.: Gorgoneion. Between eyes: A: Heracles confronting Athena and Hermes. B:
Dionysus, a satyr and Hermes.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: above Heracles' head, horizontal but bearing slightly downward toward the
end: hερασπος καλος.
CAVI Comments: On p. 667 of ABV Beazley says that Helbig suggested Erasip(p)os. This would
be hερασιπ[π]ος, but the heta needs to be explained. LGPN ii reads hΕρασ[ιπ]πος
καλος, for Ερασιππος. But I wonder if the inscription, because of its position,
does not bear a relation to Herakles, i.e a pastiche of hερα[κλες] and
[--]σ[ιπ]πος καλος. Such conflations occur on LM cups.
