CAVI Lemma: Fr. from rim and shoulder of red-glaze decorated pot{1}. From Athens.
Unattributed. Late fifth (Lang).
CAVI Subject: The only decoration is a band on rim and top of shoulder.
CAVI Inscriptions: Along the edge of glaze on the shoulder, Gr.: [--υ]παιθριος ΟΒΟΛΟ[--].
CAVI Footnotes: {1} glaze in band on rim and top of shoulder; inside unglazed. Wide mouth.
CAVI Comments: Unintelligible. Listed by Lang as an unclassified notation. She prints:
υ]παιθριος οβολο[ς, with the comment: "But why a "spit in the open air"? A
cook-out? Or is it υπαιθριος ο βολος?" βολος is a throw or a catch; this may be
right and the line poetic? - The first omicron seems to have been added later;
the third has a short vertical line within. Rather good writing.
CAVI Number: 0457
