CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Vulci. Douris. Kleophrades, potter. Early fifth. 500-490.
CAVI Subject: Int.: Nike and warrior. In the surrounding zone: chariot race. A-B: athletes.
CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: καλ[---, perhaps καλ[ε]{1}. In the zone: [hο] παις καλος. Παναιτιο[ς
καλο]ς. A: ... καλ[ος], retr. B: Παναιτιος [κ]αλο[ς]. On the reserved foot
profile, in BG: Κλε[ο]φρα[δες επο]ιεσε[ν].
CAVI Footnotes: {1} B.-O. has καλος.
CAVI Comments: + Vatican, Astarita 134 (now said to be in Berlin). The foot with its
signature may go with Berlin 2283 or 2284 (Beazley (1933a)). All readings from
ARV[2]; they seem to be Furtw.'s readings. According to Blösch, only a shadow of
an alpha and two "punktförmige Reste" are now visible in the signature after a
partial cleaning. παις is on the Astarita fragment. Furtw. reverses A and B; his
facs. shows that the inscription on Beazley's B is not retr., as ARV[2] and
B.-O. have it. - Panaitios: connected by Studniczka with the commander of a
Tenian trireme that went over to the Greeks; Hdt. 8.82; see Studniczka, RE 1931,
cols. 1002-1011. - For the interpretation of this and Berlin 2284 see Knauer
(1996), 235. - Attic with four-stroke sigmas. Tailed rho in sig.
