CAVI Lemma: Frs. of BF plaque. From Athens. Rycroft Painter. Late sixth.
CAVI Subject: Vintage: two young men and three older men with tubs (skaphai) in a grape
arbor; Athena.
CAVI Inscriptions: Fr. a: below the top margin, in large letters: [---]ελ^ιδες{1}. By Athena's
outstretched hand carrying her helmet: [Αθ]ενα. Above the head of a youth
carrying an amphora(?): εδε καν(ε) πλ̣εα̣{2}. Above the skaphe carried on the
shoulder of a bearded man talking to a youth: μετα καγο{3}. Above the head of a
bearded man carrying a skaphe: καγο τ[ι πιομαι]{4}. Fr. c:(5) above the head of
a youth carrying a skaphe: εκφεφορ^[---]{6}. Fr. b: from the mouth of a man with
outstretched arms: ε̣τι τι π[ι]ει?{7}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} a vine interferes; this inscription has always been considered part of
the dedication (Beazley (1935a)). {2} Beazley, following Wolters. Bracketed
epsilon smeared; but Wolters thought alpha corrected from epsilon: κανα, on
which Kretschmer comments apud Graef–Langlotz. Kretschmer (1894) read εδε
κανεπιεν ("he too has already drunk, αναπινειν for πινειν), but Graef–Langlotz
says the lambda is certain. {3} probably sc. πιομαι, Beazley following
Kretschmer. {4} Beazley in preference to Kretschmer's: καγο τ[ρυγεσο]. {5} in
this order, Beazley. {6} A vine intervenes just before the break. εκφεφορ[εκα
...], Kretschmer "I have carried them out;" also possible are: εκφεφορ[εται] or
εκφεφορ[εται παντα], Beazley. {7} so Kretschmer (1894), but apud Graef–Langlotz
he takes this back and thinks the meaning should be: "ist noch was zu tun?"; I
did not see the final iota in the photo.; Beazley says: "if my note is correct,
may also be incomplete."
CAVI Comments: = N.M. 15,124. Frs. a - c + North Slope AP 165. I assume that the κανε
(wicker baskets) are not shown, and that they are being filled from the skaphai
(tubs); perhaps they are the baskets on the ληνοι, where the grapes are
squeezed.
