CAVI Lemma: RF oinochoe (mug). Painter of Philadelphia 2449{1}. Second quarter fifth. Ca.
480 (CVA).
CAVI Subject: At left, a nude young athlete squatting, with one halter in right hand, his
left hand raised (without another halter); in front of him, a pick axe.
CAVI Inscriptions: To right of the top of his head: καλ[ο]ς{2}. Below the last two letters of
kalos: [h]ικετες. . . . / . / . . . . . .
CAVI Footnotes: {1} a follower of Makron. {2} so the photo, which is not very clear. CVA
prints κανος, but the third letter looks more like a lambda; probably a
misprint. The omicron does not show in the photo but is given in the text as
extant; it is probably there.
CAVI Comments: Rather large letters. The position of the inscription is unusual. Has the
athlete just landed, having lost one of his halteres? He is certainly not in the
starting position.
CAVI Number: 7748
