CAVI Lemma: WG lekythos. Achilles Painter. Second quarter fifth. 460-450. 460/55-450
(Oakley).
CAVI Subject: Departure Scene: woman to right holding out a helmet; behind her, at top,
oinochoe hung up; woman frontal, head to left, holding shield and spear.
CAVI Inscriptions: Between the figures (closer to the left woman), at top, horizontal stoich.
left-aligned three-liner: Δι(δ/φ)ιλος | καλος | Μ(ε)λανοπο{1}. ....... .....
........
CAVI Footnotes: {1} Oakley on p. 12 says that delta is written for phi; the ph. shows a delta
with two small circles at the bottom: is this an attempt at correction? The
epsilon in the father's name is miswritten (according to the ph.), but I think
it is not an eta. However, Oakley on p. 11 cites the vase for eta for epsilon. -
Earlier read Μηλανοπο, which I interpreted as Μhελανοπο [[Μh(ε)λ]]. The new
reading is here taken from Oakley.
CAVI Comments: The inscription is unusually careless for the Achilles Painter. Ionic with
omicron for omega. Alpha 9. Delta 3 once disjointed, once corrected(?). Epsilon
miswritten. The `eta' in Melanopou is for syllabic he with short e. Kappa 3, the
second diagonal coming off the first. Lambda 4. Mu 4 tall. Nu 3 medium-sized.
Omicron near 1 pointed at top. Pi 4 narrow. Sigma 4 (near 7 and flat). Phi
perhaps attempted. Cf. Athens, N.M. 12,440. Second white used. [See the chart in
AttScr for the numbers.]
