CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Vulci. Epeleios Painter. Last quarter sixth. Ca. 510 (FR).
CAVI Subject: Int.: satyr pouring from a wineskin into a large krater (smelling the wine).
A: Peleus and Thetis. B: komos (three couples of a boy and a man, plus a single
figure).
CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: to right of the satyr's face, in two curved lines: Σιλανος Τερπον.
hεδυς hοινος{1}. Under his feet: Επελειος, and to left of his back: καλος, retr.
A: Nereids, by heads: (Γ)αλυκ(ο), for Γλαυκο{2}. Χορο. Θετις, retr. Πελευς.
Ερατο. Ιρισια, retr.{3}. Κυματοθ(α)(ι){4}. B: by the heads of several figures
(spread out): [Δ]ο̣[ρ]οθ̣εος̣ | [κα]λος | ναι(χ)ι. Ισ(ρ)αχος | καλος (for
Ισαρχος){5}. Επελ[ε]ιος | καλος, retr.{6}. In two lines, non-stoich.: Θεοδο(ρ)ος
| καλος. κα(λ)ος̣(7), | ναιχι.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} [the satyr's] name is Τερπων; he says that the wine is sweet (Buschor).
{2} Kretschmer 202 and CIG read Καλυκα "Knospe", which should be emended to
Καλυκο, because the last letter is a triangular omicron. This might be
preferable to Buschor's Γλαυκο. {3} see Kretschmer 202. {4} see Kretschmer 201.
Buschor corrects into Κυματοθοα, but it should be -θοε. {5} the omicron is
omitted in Reichhold's dr. {6} for the sp. see Threatte (1980), 191/3. {7}
uncertain reading: κ(α)(π)(ο)(.), Reichhold, alpha near S 2, lambda = pi,
Omicron = delta, sigma a blob. {7} uncertain reading: κ(α)(π)(ο)(.), Reichhold,
alpha near delta, lambda = pi, Omicron = delta, sigma a blob.
CAVI Comments: Beazley says that the name is no doubt Επιλεως [for Επιλαος] but it is nearly
always spelled Επελειος. Cf. Threatte (1980), 137-41 (e for i) and 147-59, esp.
154-55 (ei for e before vowels). The form here should be Επελειος. Τερπον: also
known as a human name; as a satyr name it occurs also on London E 65, Tarquinia
RC 6848 and Louvre G 34. Many letters are miswritten, some smeared or
disjointed.
