CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Camiros. Kleophrades Painter. First quarter fifth. Ca. 480.
Late.
CAVI Subject: Int.: tondo: Peleus and Thetis. Surrounding zone: Nereids fleeing to Nereus
and Triton. A: Heracles and Cycnus. B: Aphrodite rescues Aeneas from Diomedes.
CAVI Inscriptions: Int. tondo: [Πηλε]υ̣ς{1}. To right of Thetis' upper body, along the margin:
Θητις, for Θετις. Zone: Τριτων. Κυμα[το]θεα{2}. Nηρευς. [Γ]αλενη. [Πασι]θεα.
Κυμω. Γλ[α]υκη{3}. A: Ηρακλεος. Κυκνος. Αρηος for Αρεος. B: Αθην[αια].
Διομηδης{4}. Αφροδιτης. Αινεας.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} Πηλευ]ς, CVA. The sigma is to left of an altar and to right of Thetis'
chiton. {2} Beazley gives Κυμαθεα. For Κυματοθεα see Kretschmer (1894), 238. {3}
so C. Smith; Beazley gives Γλυκη. Several inscriptions are to right of heads and
running along margins, regardless of how the figures face. Thus Κυμ... is to
right of a head, but K. faces left. {4} Boardman reads: Διομηδες.
CAVI Comments: Boardman (p. 12 n. 33) refers to the discussion of Nereid names in M.L. West,
Hesiod: Theogony 235ff. Homer and Hesiod have Kymothoe for Kymathea (B. does not
restore Kymathea). Other Nereid names: see Kretschmer (1894), 200-202 and 238.
Cf. Würzburg 540, ARV[2] 992/69, RF dinos by the Achilles Painter with many
Nereid names. Note the irregular use of eta; see Kretschmer (1894), 107. Θhετις
[[Θ{h}(ε)]](?). Αρhεος [[Αρh(ε)]](?). I give the inscriptions mainly after
Beazley (1933a). For the Nereid names, see BM Cat. The vase was a family
heirloom (Higgins). Mixed alphabet (near Ionic). Four-stroke sigma. See also
Threatte (1996) .
