CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Vulci (probably). Makron. Hieron, potter. First quarter fifth.
Hauptwerk II (Kunisch).
CAVI Subject: Int.: a satyr playing the flutes; a maenad dancing. A-B: symposium: men and
hetaerae on couches.
CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: in a curve around the satyr: Ροδο[π]ις [κα]λε{1}. On handle B/A, in BG
area of right hasta, Gr.: hιερον εποεσεν{2}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} Kunisch's sketch on p. 201 has: κ[α]λε. {2} cf. Kunisch, n. 37; the iota
omitted also on Berlin 2290+, ARV[2] 462/48. {3} pointed rho in sketch, Kunisch,
p. 201.
CAVI Comments: Type B. Richter (in Richter–Hall) says that vase is perhaps identical with
Musée Etrusque de Canino, p. 10, no. 1988, which also has εποεσεν; she cites
other bibl. derived from that reference. [No doubt this is why Beazley in Para.
says that the vase is `probably' from Vulci.] - For Rhodopis see Hdt 2.134,
Athen. 13.596b-c, BF hydriae London B 329 and Naples RC 187 (see ABV 678).
Kunisch, p. 20 n. 88 lists Rhodopis as a kale-name. - Pi very much pinched
in(which is characteristic of Hieron signatures); rendered erroneously as a rho
in Hall's dr. The rho is tailed in Rhodopis but not in the signature{3}.
Three-stroke sigma.
