9016504, ATHENIAN, Athens, Agora Museum, P9978
- Vase Number: 9016504
- Fabric: ATHENIAN
- Shape Name: FRAGMENT
- Provenance: GREECE, ATHENS
- Date: -450 to -400
- Current Collection: Athens, Agora Museum: P9978
- CAVI Collection: Athens, Agora P 9978.
- CAVI Lemma: Fr. (chip) of a clay object (lamp?). From Athens.
Unattributed. Second half fifth. *Vidi + *museum card.
- CAVI Subject: No decoration preserved.
- CAVI Inscriptions: On the outer face, in white, two non-stoich. lines
following the rim are partially preserved:
[---] θε[.]ν Ι [---]η? κε Π[---]. Under the glaze,
preliminary sketch:
[---] θεο? [.]ν Ι [---]η? κε : Π? [...]ς? [---].
- CAVI Comments: From a massive clay object hollowed in the middle; two BG
surfaces are preserved on this very tiny fr. Found in Tholos
trench A in disturbed fill. NOT A VASE; probably a lamp.
Probably a dedication, e.g. [ο δεινα ταιν or Μητρι] θεο? [ι]ν
Ι [--- ανεθ]η? κε : Π? [...]ς? [nomen patris? ---]. Butthe
eta may be a vertical plus an upsilon, hence the name of a
female dedicator, and the pi may be an Ionic gamma; hence
perhaps: [ταιν or Μητρι] θεο? [ι]ν Ι [--](.)υ? κε : Γ? [...]ς?
Ι [ανεθεκεν], which gives better spacing. The finalsigma of
the father's name is only a bit of a top diagonal stroke.
Clearly a bespoken piece.
