Metopes

Drawing of Doric order. John Boardman, Greek Art, fig.250 (Garth Denning)The rectangular panels in the upperworks of a Doric building. They are often decorated, at first with painting (clay metopes at Thermon and Kalydon), and later with relief scenes. They may also appear over the inner porches of buildings, as in the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, where they portray the Labours of Herakles.
