A Greek painter, of Herakleia in Lucania (south Italy) working in the later 5th century BC. None of his work has survived except for descriptions and possible copies in Italy. He seems to have developed a realistic, colourful style, as opposed to the more old-fashioned outline style of, e.g., Parrhasios. He is remarked as using highlights, and painting grapes so realistically that birds flew to them, and he was famous for the pathos of his figures. In many respects he seems the father of 'modern' painting, as practised in Hellenistic Greece and Rome.
