An important sea goddess and daughter of Nereus. The hero Peleus wrestled with her to win her as his bride in the course of which she mutates into fire or animals. Their son is Achilles. When he loses his armour (with Patroklos) she and her Nereid sisters are shown bringing him fresh armour, riding sea creatures. She mourns his death.
