Plaster cast of Aphrodite of Knidos . Ashmolean Museum Cast Gallery, Cast No. C172.An Athenian sculptor, working in the middle years of the fourth century BC. He was influential in reverting often to the use of marble rather than bronze, especially for the female nude, a type which he virtually invented, and which was exemplified in the Aphrodite of Knidos. He seems responsible for introducing a more languorous, sensual style in rendering both sexes (as for the Apollo Sauroktonos, and the original of the Olympia Hermes).
