God of the Greek Underworld; the word also applies to the Underworld itself. His consort was Persephone whom he carried away. He is depicted as a senior god, with no special attributes except for the dog Cerberus, who guards the Underworld. He appears in scenes with Herakles and Cerberus, and welcoming the dead and heroes on Apulian grave vases.
