A Greek painter, working mainly in the later 5th century BC. None of his work has survived except for the descriptions and possible copies in Italy. He worked on panels in a dominantly outline style, which was by his time becoming old-fashioned and being supplanted by a more realistic use of shading and colour. Yet he painted a Theseus said to look as though he had been fed on roses, and was held to be a master of expression, which had not been a notable feature of earlier, classical work.
