Oinomaos

Oinomaos's oath with Pelops. Detail from Apulian red-figure clay vase c. mid 4th century BC. St. Petersburg State Hermitage Museum 4323Mythical king of Pisa near Olympia. He was warned by an oracle that he would die at the hands of his son-in-law, and therefore wished to prevent his daughter from ever marrying. He was an outstanding charioteer, and promised his daughter's hand to the man who could defeat him in a chariot race, thinking that this could never happen. After many suitors had failed this test, Pelops succeeded, but only by sabotaging Oinomaos' chariot.
