In mythology, Arcadian Atalanta is a huntress, first to strike the Calydonian Boar, and was thought to have loved the expedition's leader, Meleager. The related Boeotian Atalanta was also sportive, and said she would marry only the suitor who could outrun her. Melanion (or Hippomenes) succeeded, by distracting her throwing down golden apples, given to him by Aphrodite. The gift is shown in classical art but the race only later. In archaic art she also wrestles with Peleus at funeral games for Pelias.
